Failing to Plan means Planning to Fail“

What an effective statement, especially in the context of one’s Career.

Like in the case of every critical mission, in career- building also there has to be a plan to follow. Career is an important part of everyone's life, so the necessity of career plan should never be underestimated.

To explain it better, let me draw an analogy between career planning and playing test cricket. They both are similar. A test cricket is all about thinking of controlling the 5 days of game on the field and not just about some big overs or quick wickets. The goal is to come out at the end as a winner.

Career planning is all about planning for the decades of professional life in-front of one and not merely for the next appraisal, job or career move. The goal here to come out of it as a name to reckon with in the chosen field.

Being a success in test cricket requires one to approach the game as a whole - to plunder runs while the going is good and take the chances when the stars are shining.  When the going gets tough and the opposition is getting heavy, one just need to play for his wicket and ensure that he doesn’t throw it away. The understanding that not every session will go in one’s favour and in such cases one just need to bid for his time is what helps the person sail through.

Ironically, what we see today is people approaching career planning as if they are playing 20-20 cricket. The thinking time-frames have become shorter and their strokes – purist’s anguish and audiences’ delight. In career parlance it is like making moves for other’s momentary admiration without thinking about the long-term consequences for self.
